New Feature Big Hit At Balmoral
Growing an interest in mushrooms
Thousands of visitors to this year’s Balmoral Show got a glimpse into the mysterious world of growing mushrooms . One of Ireland’s agricultural success stories,Producer organisation Northway Mushrooms constructed a huge tunnel to take people on a behind the scenes mushroom journey, and it proved to be a big hit with young and old at the Show.
As the largest agricultural show in Northern Ireland, Balmoral Show was the perfect launch pad for Northway Mushrooms’ learning tunnel,The Northway Mushrom Trail. Replicating the experience of being inside a mushroom tunnel, the innovative exhibition stand invited children to learn about the stages of growing, from making the compost through to picking and packing the crop.
Northway Mushrooms commented
“This was our first major presence at Balmoral Show and we were thrilled with the feedback from visitors. While most people know, in general terms, how dairy or arable farms work, mushroom growing is a comparative mystery. It was wonderful seeing children engage with the mushroom tunnel. We had a chef preparing delicious mushroom based meals, and it was very rewarding seeing children trying this superfood for themselves, quite a few of them trying mushrooms for the very first time. Balmoral Show is a fantastic way for people of all ages to engage and connect with home grown food and we were thrilled to be part of it.”
